Why We Choose Health Insurance

Why we choose health insurance
We all tend to buy health insurance for the same reasons. We want to bypass the NHS waiting lists and receive treatment when we need it.
Going into hospital is a stressful occasion and as a patient you want to be as comfortable as possible, private health cover will often mean your own private room with en-suite and home comforts such as television, internet and a choice of food when you want it.
Health insurance is not designed to replace the NHS, a health plan is designed to provide cover for the treatment of acute conditions. The private sector has very limited resources for Accident and Emergency and the treatment of chronic conditions, so both will tend not to be covered on your health insurance.
Health insurance for women who are pregnant
If you take any of the leasing insurers and look through the policy terms the health insurance tends not to cover normal pregnancy. In the majority of cases midwives and doctors carry out the everyday care of the pregnancy through the NHS. A pregnant woman will have regular appointments and scans with their general practitioner and midwife to ensure the pregnancy progresses as it should and this will continue after the birth to ensure the baby and mother is in good health.
Now although a standard health plan may not cover normal pregnancy you do have the option of going private and paying for the services of a midwife and obstetrician should you require. However given the quality of the antenatal care through the NHS the private sector resources for everyday pregnancy care is limited.
Cover you can expect for pregnancy
Now although many plans will not cover normal pregnancy it is important to note that each insurer has its own terms and any cover relating to pregnancy can differ significantly. Some insurers provide cover for pregnancy related issues and it’s important to understand the differences between the policies.
Although health insurance for women is not technically specific below are some of the benefits you could expect from your insurance during pregnancy.
- Cover for some complications of pregnancy and childbirth
- Cash benefit if child is born using the NHS
- Cover for certain obstetrics procedures.
If you are looking for health insurance for women which specifically covers pregnancy some of the more comprehensive plans after a period of membership, say 2 years include cover often capped at a monetary limit for private consultations and tests as long as you have a normal pregnancy.
Additional Health insurance options to consider
Outpatient cover
Health insurance is built around inpatient treatment, as a policy becomes more comprehensive so it provides a greater level of outpatient cover, with increasing levels of outpatient cover comes increasing premiums. It is important you read the terms of the policy to understand the level of cover it provides for your specific needs, cover for pregnancy will increase the more comprehensive your plan.
Alternative medicines
An additional option in many health plans which will add around 6% to your premiums, providing cover for complementary treatments such as physiotherapy and chiropractic treatment.
Excess
An excess can help reduce your monthly premiums, by including an excess you are agreeing to pay the value of the excess either pre policy year or per claim to help towards the cost of treatment. Excesses can range from as little as £50 up to £1,000. A £100 excess could reduce your premiums by approximately 5%.

Help answer the question about health insurance
Can I reimburse myself health insurance costs from my company? We used to have individual health insurance, and I would pay for it out of my own company (an S Corp). When we got insurance through my husband's employer, I stopped reimbursing myself.
He is paid for by the company, and then it costs extra to add myself and our child.
I was just going to deduct health insurance premiums on our Sch A, but we don't have enough other medical expenses to meet the limit.
Is it ligit to go ahead and reimburse myself the amount that it cost for the health insurance? Then it would be a business expense. Thanks.

I applaud you on your insight. Of course:
1. There already is a grocery coverage plan – it is called food stamps.
2. And they already have such government agencies as the FDA and the EPA to make sure that water is clean and food not poisonous.
3. As for the golden goose, are you referring the huge subsidies the government gave the railroads? "From 1850-1871, the railroads received more than 175 million acres (708,000 km²) of public land – an area more than one tenth of the whole United States and larger than Texas."

Or are you referring all the wars the government fought on behalf of United Fruit?

Or the other subsidies the U.S. government has given to big corporations over the centuries?

4. As for "socialism", it was Richard Nixon, a Republican president, who imposed wage and price controls.
So if you think the U.S. was a free market economy until Obama got elected, you'd better learn a bit more about American History.
There is a reason all developed economies and most other economies are mixed economies:

and that's because pure economies, whether socialist or free-market just don't deliver.
The issue is that most people cannot afford to pay for individual coverage. "Saving money" by getting a policy that covers almost nothing hardly counts as being insured. For an individual to get comprehensive coverage would be unaffordable to anyone who is not able to pay for all their health care costs out-of-pocket.
So the net effect would be that more people would end up uninsured. Period. That's what you want. It would certainly "save" the country money on health care spending if 1/3 of current health care consumers were cut off from the system. Since we're already at 3rd world outcomes, that would sink us even lower. ?°)
@josephdupont Yeah and the majority of those 47 nations have socialized medicine.
It might indeed have been better if things had remained that way. Health insurance was, after all, quite unusual before World War II. Two of the effects of the expanding insurance industry have been (1) costs have outstripped the rate of inflation by a good margin and (2) philanthropy, with the wealthy donating entire hospitals at times, has essentially disappeared from the scene. I don't quite see how the clock could be turned back, though.
@shaithis45 i couldnt agree more
no healh insurance? krankenschutz24
Health Insurance from Germany for US-citizen for US$50/month
Because Barry Soetoro says so…and his minions bow down and obey.
We care because it could easily be us. The costs are simply too high, not buying tennis shoes still wouldn't give someone enough money in their budget to buy a policy on their own. If someone has a pre-existing condition, they might as well just give up.
Even those with group insurance through work would be SOL if our company went out of business. The costs are prohibitive for most people, it's simply not affordable. Which is bizarre, since other countries with far superior healthcare pay about half of what we pay. Obviously the system is broken and needs fixing.
The truly non-working already get help. It's the working people, people at small businesses that don't have group insurance, the working poor, who can't get government program help but also can't pay out of pocket. If you studied this for five minutes, you'd know this.
insurance is a SCAM! there are certin things in life that should be non profit…

They don't have Blue Shield where you are? Are you writing this on Mars?
The reason there are so few health insurance companies is because of the MASSIVE AMOUNT OF GOVERNMENT REGULATION!
So – are you proposing to solve this with… more regulation?
Aleferny: did you read the post at all before you replied? He's in favor of checkups and oil changes. He just thinks they should be paid for out of pocket because it would lower the cost for everyone. I really believe the average person would end up saving money if they went with a plan like this because his or her premiums would decrease by more than the cost of the annual checkups and the occasional sick visit.
What does this have to do with home schooling?
@jjonathan360 perhpas if they were to make health insurance more of an investment opportinty where you get a set amount back for using the insurance left and become and individual partner in the system (i.e. stocks) while your basical policy covers you at 100% bor basic services and hospitalization. Though it was never about insurance it was address true medical costs and perhaps the industry should based rates on a sliding scale based on ones income keeping it affordable for all.
Auto insurance protects other people. Health insurance protects you. Being able to pay for damage you may cause to others is something you have to do to drive. You should have to be able to protect others from having to pay your medical bills because you didn't have insurance but apparently Arizona and Minnesota don't think that.
If even capitalist Ireland can provide universal health care for it’s people, why can’t we? The nature of free-market health care encourages these practices because actually treating people means a loss of profit. I’ll never get health care in the current system because “high functioning” autism is a pre-existing condition that can’t be blamed on a poor lifestyle. The sooner we join the rest of the world in providing non-profit universal health care, the better.
@jjonathan360 Howard Dean said it best. All they had to do was expand Medicare for all (i.e. up the premiums from our paychecks) and so long private healthcare. Instead the bill just seemed to keep supporting a corrupted industry that is highly biased based on risk and zip code you live in.
